It’s December and that means one thing – Summer is here! I often want to make the most of the good weather, but don’t know where to go. So, I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of things to do in Cape Town as a Summer Bucket List – inspired by Kalyn Nicholson’s Fall Bucket List video. These are just some ideas for the next time you’re looking for something to do.
Things to do in Cape Town
Although Summer is hot and has great weather…sometimes it’s just too hot to be outdoors. So, some indoor (air conditioned!!) activities are part of the list.
Visit the Zeitz MOCAA – I mentioned the Zeitz MOCAA in my post about Museum Night, and how I still haven’t been there. It’s definitely a Summer Bucket List item for me.
Explore the Iziko Museums and galleries – I’m definitely the type of person that loves museums and galleries. There are a range of different museums and historic places in Cape Town that I’m still dying to explore.
Go to the Clay Café – The Clay Café in Hout Bay is a place to unleash your creativity! At least, that’s what I’ve heard from friends who have been there. I haven’t been there yet and would love to go there.
Hang out at a cool coffee shop – Cape Town has so many amazing coffee shops all across the city. I just want to take my laptop to one, sit near a window and look busy with a cup of (decaf) coffee. Seriously – this is something I must do. I have a favourite tea shop (S/O to O’ways in Claremont), but I have yet to experience Cape Town’s coffee culture.
Have a Beach Day – Beach days are key in Cape Town. Spending the entire day at the beach with a braai or a picnic? Absolute heaven. A day trip to Gordon’s Bay is basically a family ritual at this point – though West Coast National Park is even more of an adventure!
Go Strawberry/Cherry Picking – This time of year, almost everyone has some amazing pictures from a day spent strawberry picking in Stellenbosch. It’s not too far out, and it’s a great idea to freeze the extra strawberries for summer smoothies.
Company’s Gardens/Night Market – Around Christmas, the Company’s Gardens in town hosts an annual night market. There’s always great food and a great vibe so it’s definitely something I’d love to do again this year.
Bike riding in Sea Point – I’ve seen so many people do this and it looks like so much fun! Apparently, you can rent bikes at the Promenade and ride with the ocean next to you. I forgot how to ride a bike (yes…I know), but I want to try it out anyway. Followed by ice-cream (obviously).
Go to Ratanga Junction one last time – Our *only* theme park, Ratanga Junction, will be closing after this summer. I haven’t been there in years, so I need to soak up the nostalgia and face my fears by riding The Cobra before it closes down.
Attend a Summer Sunset concert – every year, Kirstenbosch Gardens runs a series of Summer Sunset concerts. I’ve always wanted to go, but never got a chance. Hopefully, this year will be the year!
Watch a Movie at the Galileo – the Galileo Open Air Theatre is another one of those Cape Town trends that everyone else under the sun has done. The theatre operates from many different locations, and it shows a selection of old movies. I just need to get around to it.
I hope this list is helpful if you’re looking for things to do in Cape Town. This city offers so much more than what’s on this list, so explore and have fun. Don’t forget – Cape Town is under severe water restrictions, so please be mindful of that and save water with your activities! Otherwise, my social media accounts are also linked in the sidebar (I would definitely recommend my instagram account to stay up-to-date with all the fun things I’ll be doing this Summer).
