At the end of last year, I was looking for a way to start doing yoga. Since classes can be quite expensive (and I’m already attending kickboxing classes), I turned to the internet. Fortunately, the solution was presented to me by Yoga With Adriene: her 31 Day Yoga Revolution challenge. So, I rolled out my yoga mat on 1 January 2017 and dived right in.
Each day had a different theme. The focus was not just on the outward (i.e. going through the motions, working on each pose), but on the inward as well. I didn’t complete 11 of the 31 days due to life getting in the way, but I really it missing from my day (I’m hoping to go back and complete those 11 days in February). As a beginner, the routines were easy enough to follow, but still held an element of challenge and left so much room for progress.
What you need:
The cool thing about doing yoga from an online source like Yoga With Adriene is that it’s free. All you really need (aside from an internet connection and a laptop to play the videos) is approximately 30 minutes a day, a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed, and a yoga mat if you have one. Because it’s online, you can access the videos at any time. You don’t have to worry about rushing to a class or leaving the comfort of your home. This works really well if you’re trying to build up self-confidence, because you can work at your own pace and make mistakes without feeling awkward.
My favourite practices were the “Light” practice, the “Strength” practice and the “Rhythm” practice. When it came to the end of the 31 Days, the last practice (which was without instruction – just following along Adriene’s movements) felt natural and free. Adriene also keeps things light-hearted and funny, so you don’t feel like you’re stuck in a super-serious yoga session.
Doing the Yoga Revolution convinced me to seriously take up yoga. I’m hoping to start attending classes somewhere as soon as I can. For now, I’m working through more of Adriene’s videos at home at my own pace. My yoga journey will continue on.
